Instagram: the next big thing

instagram

Twitter and Facebook dominate the name game when it comes to trying to convince people you are on top of the social media game. But every year, new platforms come out with a variety of new and illusive (to FB and Twitter anyways) features. I recently caught an article from on Chicagonow.com talking about a new image platform called Instagram.

from chicagonow:
Instagram is all about photos, but it goes so far beyond the photos you post to Facebook and Twitter, although you can do that directly from Instagram. You take photos (or use photos already in your photo library), apply one of several cool optional filters and then share them with your Instagram network and other social networks including Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare -- even your Tumblr blog.
The coolest part is that you're encouraged to share the photos you take in the moment, rather than just collecting the special ones. So if you take a cool photo of a sunset, you can instantly share it with your Instagram network and with your other networks all quickly and easily with just a few keystrokes.
Why is it so addictive? If you think about what Facebook and Twitter are trying to accomplish, one is about updating your feed and sharing with your friends and family, while the other is about quick 140-character updates. Both allow you to share photos, but Instagram showcases them in a big way. You're encourage to comment and like photos, and the most popular ones make the networkwide popular page.
I scoped it out and it seems pretty neat. I'm sure the technology will be soon integrated into one of the "giant's" formats, but for the time being, ingenuity and originality reign supreme.
