Technology Wins the Super Bowl!

But it’s not even Sunday yet! Wait a second…technology? That’s right. Think about it. During any major playoff game from baseball to hockey to basketball, and yes, to even football, people watch with their phones in their hands in order to give a play-by-play on their favorite social media site. It doesn’t matter that the status updates won’t make sense two minutes later either. It happens and we all do it.

What else do we do with our phones? We view scores, we shop online during commercials, or in the case of the Super Bowl, we view commercials before they even hit our televisions.

So who will win the 2012 Super Bowl? Cell phones and social media, that’s who. A study was completed by iProspect, a global marketing agency, about what consumers are doing before, during, and after the game, and more importantly, how advertisers can cash in on the findings. According to the study, consumers spent $10.2 billion during last year’s Super Bowl. That is almost 10 times the amount that Cyber Monday brought in.

iProspect offers the following data:

  • 85% of search queries during Super Bowl XVLV came from mobile.
  • Super Bowl-related searches increased 122% from 2009 to 2010 with an additional 33% increase from 2010 to 2011.
  • An estimated 2+ billion impressions were delivered through Facebook posts, with over 60% of fans posting during the game.
  • More than 4.5 million tweets were generated over the six-hour Super Bowl span. The record for most tweets per second was smashed six times throughout the game, topping out at 4,064 tweets at game’s end.

What does this mean for you? It means you not only are engaged, but you also are helping the economy! Do you want to become the next advertising target? You will…just wait until the studies come out about this year’s game!
