A Quarterly Social Media Index from HighBeam Research
Social media is an ever-evolving phenomenon. Current platforms constantly change, and new ones pop up all the time, but which of them remain popular in the media? Using the premier online research tool, HighBeam Research (www.highbeam.com), we looked into the total media attention received from these six social media outlets for each month so far in 2012.
Twitter continues to dominate in the media, staying on top every month so far this year with around 55 percent of the total monthly media attention. Facebook consistently takes second place each month as well, with right around 41 percent. All other platforms fall well behind those two, with LinkedIn taking the third place finish at around 2 percent. The only change in order came last month, when both Foursquare and Pinterest beat out MySpace in media attention. In March, Foursquare finished fourth with .64 percent, and Pinterest jumped to fifth with .61 percent.
